JEEVAN SAMVARDHAN FOUNDATION

दीपावाली  is a religious festival. Though lighting दिया feels special these days, in the past दिया were lit indoors every night and were hardly special.

दीपावाली is special for its outdoor lighting, meant for मोक्ष of the पितृ (dead ancestors) and celebration of the killing of नरकासुर (the नरक demon). The purpose of this festival in detailed in the पद्म पुराण, स्कन्द पुराण, भविष्य पुराण, etc. "Festival of victory of light over darkness" is an erasure of the religious identity of a religious festival.

Rangoli are usually made outside the threshold of the main entrance, in the early mornings after cleaning the area.  The rangoli represents the happiness, positivity and liveliness of a household, and is intended to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck. It is believed that a Hindu household without a clean entrance and rangoli is an abode of daridra (bad luck).

The purpose of rangoli is beyond decoration. Traditionally either powdered calcite and limestone or cereal powders are used for the basic design. The limestone is capable of preventing insects from entering the household, and the cereal powders attract insects and keep them from entering the household. Using cereal powders for rangoli is also believed as panch-mahabhoota Seva because insects and other dust microbes are fed.

jeevan samvardhan foundation inspires and helps volunteers to empower individuals and communities to convey about optimistic change with the aid of encouraging them to provoke action of their environment. Visited this  all girls orphanage a few days ago to help them paint diyas for diwali which would then later be sold to earn money for educating the girls.   I was happy to learn that the NGO was doing an excellent work in enabling these girls in working which would help them with schooling and education
